Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
