UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
