Our team is checking images and video shared earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
