In a recent development, Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that the United States has proposed a proposed peace plan featuring protection pledges for Ukraine spanning a period of 15 years.

The Framework's Specifics

President Zelenskyy noted that in the course of a high-stakes meeting with US President President Trump, he had requested security guarantees for as long as 50 years. Yet, the proposed framework foresees a shorter assurance of fifteen years from the United States.

The specifics remain undefined what form these commitments would take, but the Ukrainian leader has been pushing for "article-5-like" security guarantees, referring to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's founding principle that aggression towards any member should be seen as an attack on all.

Negotiation Developments

Zelenskyy has said, Washington's protection assurances for Ukraine under the updated peace plan outline have been completely settled, although the American leader expressed more caution, suggesting the progress was more like 95%.

Both leaders said that advancements were achieved during the discussions in Mar-a-Lago. Trump, however, cautioned that there were a couple of challenging unresolved matters, including over territory.

The Path to a Meeting with Russia

Separately, the Ukrainian President also told the press that a meeting with Russia would be conceivable following the Washington and its European partners agreed on a Ukraine-proposed peace plan to end the war.

This remark comes in response to the US President stated publicly that he thought a three-way discussion between Russia, Ukraine and the US could happen when conditions are suitable.

Historical Context

Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin have not held direct talks since December 2019. That previous engagement, brokered by the French and German heads of state, aimed to revive efforts to resolve the persistent war.

Subsequently, in the spring of 2025, the Russian president declined to travel to Istanbul for a proposed meeting with Zelenskyy, rejecting a bold proposal to talk about ending the war in Turkey.

Unresolved Land Disputes

A key point of contention remains the future of the Donbas area in eastern Ukraine. The US President indicated that a plan to turn the territory, which is predominantly held by Moscow's forces, into a DMZ continues to be a topic of debate.

The President went on to say that it will be known in a matter of weeks whether the war can end.

The involved parties have emphasized that the extended negotiations would persist as they aim to achieve a final resolution to the nearly four-year hostilities.
