The Mayor-Elect states his intention to live in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his triumph in November.
"The choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will always live a part of me and the work I do," he said.
Political Debate
In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
But his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his modest Astoria apartment.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces the average income.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
