The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
