Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
