Larian Studios Details Its Application of Generative AI for New Divinity Game

The studio behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just unveiled its next major project, sparking a wave of excitement within the industry. However, recent statements from the company's figurehead have added nuance to the discussion, addressing the team's stance toward generative artificial intelligence.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new clarification, Swen Vincke explained that the company is employing machine learning for particular preliminary tasks. These involve enhancing presentation materials, producing initial concept art, and writing temporary text.

Importantly, Vincke stressed that the final assets in the game will be created solely by actual creatives. "Our team is developing every line ourselves," he affirmed.

We are continuously growing our roster of concept artists and are busily putting together narrative groups.

As concept art is being particularly mentioned — we currently have 23 concept artists and have roles to fill for additional creatives.

Each initiative we do is additive and designed to enabling creatives to spend additional energy on actual creation.

Every ML tool used well is supplementary to a artist's workflow, not a substitute for their talent.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The admission of using AI at first provoked backlash among a segment of the fanbase. In reaction, Vincke offered more clarification on social media.

"We use AI tools to gather inspiration, just like we use the internet and reference books," he stated. "During the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then substitute with authentic illustrations."

He continued, "Our studio recruits talent for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to replicate what a machine suggests."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had in the past broken down the team's targeted strategy to this technology, defining its use into three main areas:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This encompasses motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to rapidly prototype rough mock-ups of scenarios to test concepts ahead of full development.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how machine learning could in the future enhance innovative reactivity, specifically in managing player-driven narratives in a vast role-playing world.

He clearly stated that central narrative disciplines — including writing — are not fields where the company is replacing artistic involvement. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these precise positions.

"We are not launching a game with any AI components, nor considering trimming down staff to substitute them with AI," Vincke summarized.
