Democratic Congressional Candidate Indicted Over Chicago Immigration Protests

Kat Abughazaleh, a progressive candidate for Congress, faces federal charges on charges related to involvement during demonstrations outside a federal immigration center in the vicinity of the Chicago area in September.

Details of the Indictment

Federal court documents, filed last week, claim this twenty-six-year-old Palestinian American political figure and five other individuals “physically hindered and impeded” a federal agent that was “compelled to proceed very slowly” to prevent harm to the protesters.

Abughazaleh, who is running for a congressional seat in Illinois, was charged with conspiracy to forcibly impede or injure a federal agent as well as hindering the agent while they were performing official duties.

Alleged Actions During Protest

As stated in court papers, the group “planned together with others” to prevent by force, intimidation, and threat, Agent A, from discharging the duties of his office.

Prosecutors claim that Abughazaleh, along with the other individuals, “banged aggressively” on the agent’s vehicle, “crowded together in the front and side” of the vehicle and also “pressed on the car to block its progress”.

The charging documents state those accused scratched the term “pig” onto the car and damaged a side mirror and rear wiper.

Additionally, it is claimed the candidate in particular “positioned herself with others in front of the official car”, and with her hands on the hood braced her body and hands against the vehicle while staying directly in the car’s way, obstructing and blocking the agent.

Defendant’s Statement

After the charges were filed, the congressional candidate, recognized for her substantial online following, labeled the charges “a politically motivated case”.

“This is a … gross attempt at silencing dissent, a right protected under the first amendment. This case is yet another attempt by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and punish those who dare to speak up. That is the reason I will contest these unfair allegations,” she stated.

Abughazaleh added: “While we were practicing our First Amendment rights, immigration officers have struck, pulled, thrown, fired pepper balls at, and used tear gas on numerous demonstrators, including me. Merely because we dared to assert that hooded individuals seizing our neighbors and frightening our community should not become routine.

“This case targets our rights to protest, speak freely, and associate with anyone who disagrees with this government … Throughout my career, I have resisted the nation’s regression toward authoritarianism, and I will not stop now,” she added.

Broader Context

The charges emerge amid increased federal immigration operations in various left-leaning cities such as Chicago – a move which has been harshly criticized by local and state leaders.

These operations have faced broad resistance from citizens, Democratic members of Congress, and advocacy organizations, with the ACLU describing them as a “build out of a national paramilitary policing force that could be used to … consolidate President Donald Trump’s power”.
